The Royale Caroline was built at Bedford in 1749 as King George II's state yacht. She was one of the most decorated vessels of all time. Rigged for regatta sailing, she was as fast as she was beautiful. In constant use by the Royal Family until 1805, the Royal Caroline was dismantled in 1820 after 71 years of service. Her lines were instrumental in the development of English Naval Architecture in the 1700's, especially in the design of frigates throughout the century.
